Mississippi Relief Updates

"Voices from the Field"

Dear Saints in Christ Jesus ,

I hope this E-letter finds you doing well. For the next few updates I will be putting other voices than my own from the mission field in Mississippi on these updates. The reason I want to do this is so that you can get a feel from others the effects that this work has had own there lives and there perspective of how things are going and what they have seen. I would ask for those of you that have supported use in the past not to forget use in your prayers the field is still white to harvest.

Pastor John Elliott,
Hitchcock Foursquare

The Body of Christ becoming the HANDS and FEET of JESUS!

John ,

Over the next few months, volunteers are just as important or maybe even more important than when the storm first happened. The clean- up work to this point has given the people hope and something to make them feel as though there is “light at the end of the tunnel.”  Although, there are still people who haven't had any help and are now feeling more helpless and depressed; and are loosing all hope as the days drag by. We need more volunteers in the months ahead so we can help give the people not only hope in rebuilding their homes but give them a new start with the blessed hope of Jesus Christ. If we could help and bring hope to only 3 or 4 families a week, it would be well worth the time of everyone involved.  We talk to people every day that are living on the edge not knowing where to turn. We can get our chainsaws and shovels out and point them to Jesus or we can do nothing.

Terry & Cynthia Owens

EVERYTHING IS GONE….I HAVE NOTHING….

I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU’RE HERE …..

These were words that we heard over and over again as I had the privilege of joining LIFE PACIFIC students to do Disaster Relief work in Mississippi during a week of their Christmas break.

I had heard that you couldn’t really believe the devastation until you were there, and that is the truth. It looks like a war zone…..even after 4 months! These pictures only give you glimpses of the miles and miles of devastation.

Our Foursquare World Base has 3 full time workers, Terry and Cynthia Owens, Directors and Lance Burton is our Base Camp Manager. These three servants of God have hearts of gold and are truly His hands extended in this community that continues to be in shock. Our “tents” have been pitched right next to the “Katrina Kitchen Tent”. This tent has volunteers of all ages from all different denominations that feed on an average 1500 people a day. At each meal our team would sit with those that needed to talk. And almost everyone did. They wanted to tell their story. I recall one 78 year old man and his wife who said they were “too old to rebuild, but they needed a roof over their head”. He couldn’t believe we came all the way from California to volunteer. With tears in his eyes he let me pray with them.

We spent two days on a home owned by a single mom. Everything had been ruined. The smell of mold and rot was everywhere. We took everything out to the street for the army core of engineers to later haul away and burn. It was back breaking work. Yet, at the end of the day our team was so emotionally connected to this woman we had never met, we left her a bible and wrote personal notes telling her of our love and our prayers for her family.

The surge of water destroyed so many homes and business that the government cannot keep up with the demand. I overheard one “city official” say to a family. “The only hope to rebuild your community is under this tent.” In a city meeting held under “this tent”, the city stated that “we want to rebuild our city with the same Spirit that’s under this tent.”

I have never been more proud to be apart of the body of Christ and specifically Foursquare .

I feel like the Lord is doing a process so down deep with in me. The Lord has spoken so many things to me. Joy in all circumstances.

Alison

My eyes were opened all the more to how I should hold no special attachments to the things of this world as I witnessed the possibility of losing everything in an instant.

Serving in the relief effort was a great experience. Serving people was amazing, and the residents were resilient and positive. I think God is helping me to have an attitude of truly giving that is beyond myself.

Luke

God is so BIG here! He has changed me to step outside of my box and to be a “Vocal Christian” and not embarrassed to shout it out. I am forever changed by this experience.

God opened my eyes and showed me that people are still suffering from Hurricane Katrina and to do all that I can to help in the relief effort.

God showed me how to be more compassionate to people and the things they care about. He also has revealed the bigger picture about what He has in store for my life.

I guess a big thing was just a new perspective on things and seeing the unity in the workers.
I want to take that home with me.
